My name is Mark. I used to live out in Venice in the early 1980's. I used
to do a lot of drinking at a club called ...The Sidewalk Cafe...with a
real outrageous black guy named Ricky Butler. He used to cruise around
Venice Beach on his roller skates. I wonder what happened to him. Does
anybody remember this guy. Thanks.

He did the mirror mosaic/painting on the wall of the cafe across the street

For some fiction I'm planning, I'd like to know about Venice and the L.A.
Police Dept. in the later 1950's: 1) Was Venice considered punishment
duty for "bad" cops? 2) What does anyone remember about Officer
Gershin?

I am researching a gal who did stunts on a Wall of Death (aka Motordrome)
on the Venice pier during 1924-25 and who also lived at 306-2 Aldebaran

can view "The Beat", a short film shot in the VW in, I think,
'64? Does anyone remember "Buddah" Bob Mattox or "Little

and pulled a little red wagon around?

Circa 1961, I was at the Unicorn in Hollywood and someone sang this long,
long, ballad, titled - I think - "The Last Night at the Gas House."
It was the story, in song, about the final night when the cops raided
the place and hauled everyone away. Lots of great verses, both funny and
poignant. I don't remember who the singer was, however, I dimly recall
that he was the warm up act for either Hoyt Axton or Judy Henski. Wish
I could find the lyrics to that song. I'd love to make a movie around
it.

I encountered an artist on the boardwalk. The art was the most brilliant
thing I'd ever seen. The pieces were illustrations on old sun-aged paper.
One of the illustrations was of this two faceless gentlemen riding a unicycle
(one upside down and the other right side up on the same cycle), the other
portrait was of a woman making a floating man out of a flock of birds
that ushered forth from the horizen.

I remember a party at one of the houses on a canal during the Canal Festival
attended by sun sign Aquarians only. Very strange.... On the water a procession
of the counterculture's finest regaled in cotton, beads and silver, poling
and paddling anything that would float. Across the water flying upside
down was an American flag colored pink and chartreuse, trimmed in gold
fringe. I am looking for a picture of that flag. If anyone has a picture
or can remember the colors accurately, or knows who made it, please let
me know.

has changed around the Waldorf since 1915.
