Kites at Venice Beach

Acrylic, 24" x 18"

Based on a photo I took somewhere between 1978 and 1984.

I assume this was a Steve Eideken kite, as described by Al Hargus III who said, "...we saw a Skippy peanut butter commercial on TV. In the background was absolutely the neatest "bunch" of kites flying in a row . They had tails and looked like a rainbow. (I later learned that this was Steve Eideken and he was flying Rainbow stunt kites in a train.)"

An innovator who started the Rainbow kite company in Venice, Eideken (or possibly Edieken) was killed in Washington state in 1983 while participating in the launch of what was then the world's biggest kite.
